Tip No 1 - Get out there in the world

If you spend most of your time in front of the TV, you are not going to meet anyone.

New people will not materialise themselves in your front room - you have to get out there and meet them.

A lot of people meet their prospective partners at work. How often do you suggest that you all go out for a social evening after work? How often do you accept invitations to do so?

If you go to the gym, do you work-out your muscles and nothing else? There are loads of flyers at the gym for running groups, paint-ball weekends and all kinds of activities. Give it a go. Most of the people who go in for these activities are just like you - they want to meet people and have a good time.

How much money and time do you invest in developing yourself?

Attend enrichment workshop. Some examples are yoga, dancing, martial arts, painting, pottery, group singing and acting. You get to learn something AND you meet people with similar interests.

Tip No 2 - Be interesting by being interested

Jay Abrahams, the famous marketing expert, tells the story of a conversation he had with a stranger in a bar in Sydney.He introduced himself and said that he was there to do a lecture tour. He then asked the stranger "What brings you to Sydney?"

An hour later the man got up to leave. "You know Mr Abrahams" he said, "You are one of the most interesting people I have ever met". Jay recounts that during the entire hour the only words he spoke were those of his introduction and his first question!

People like people who are interested in them. You don't have to shut up entirely but when you engage someone in conversation make sure you spend at least 60% of the time listening to THEM!

Tip No 3 - Let them know you are interested!

How are people going to know you are interested if you don't show them? Someone has to make the first move.

If you are interested in someone, smile at them. It's not an invitation to engage in sex, it's just a nice way of shining your light.

Tip No 4 - Give people a reason to talk to you

Give people a reason to talk to you. For example, one way to meet people is to wear or carry something that gets you noticed. It could be a brooch. or an unusual umbrella. or an outrageous tie. You can create an individual style of dress for yourself. Let your clothes reflect your personality.

If you want to make a meaningful statement about yourself, carry a book about something that interests you. You can also start conversations with strangers on the strength of a book they are reading. Lines like 'Great book' if you've read it or 'That looks fascinating ' if you haven't, will get them talking.
